Songwriters - How to Reference A Song You Love to Come Up With a New Melody for Your Song

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

A great way to come up with a melody is to look at one you love and modify it to be completely new. Let's reference the song "Firework" by Katy Perry as an example.

Let's look at the notes of the chorus aligned to the beat. The numbers on top represent the beats of the song:

3-------4-------1-------2-------3-------4-------1-------2-------3

Ba-by--you're-a-fiiiii-----------------yer-------work

Eb-Db-C------Bb-Bb---------------Ab--------C

Let's try keeping those same notes, but changing the rhythm to come up with a new melody. We'll start our melody on beat 1, instead of beat 3:

1-------2-------3-------4-------1-------2-------3

Ba------------------by-you're-a-fiiii----yer

Eb------------------Db-C----BbBb---Ab

Of course, we wouldn't use those same words, but I wanted you to be able to easily follow along. If you play these notes on your piano or guitar to the new beats I've assigned them to above, you'll see the melody takes on a completely different feel. You'll noticed I deleted the last C note from the original melody, which also helped change up the melody a bit.

There are endless ways in which you can keep the same notes as a current song, while modifying the rhythm, to come up with something new.

You probably noticed in that last example that aside from changing the rhythm of the notes, and omitting the last note when I was referencing "Firework," I also started my melody on a different beat. I started on the 1, whereas the chorus in "Firework" starts on the 3.

The beat you start your melody on can affect the mood of your song. A lot of times songwriters write their melodies starting on the downbeat (or beat 1) of a measure, because it tends to come more naturally to do so. If you do that all the time, it can become tedious.

It's also important to note that whatever word lands on the downbeat (the 1 beat) will tend to be the most highlighted word. Even though Katy Perry starts the chorus melody on the 3 beat, the word "Firework" hits on the downbeat. That makes sense, because it's the title of the song, so it stands out when it's placed on the 1 beat. The word "firework" also stands out because she stretches it out to over a measure long.

Changing the beat the melody starts on is seldom considered, but can make a big impact in how your melody hits your listeners' ears. It's definitely worth experimenting with.

Songs about famous people

It is not at all surprising that there are so many songs about famous people. From the earliest days of civilization, people have sought ways to pay tribute to people in their lives, particularly those who are considered as cultural heroes. Artists capture their images in paint or clay, and they to musicians and song writers, the best possible way for them to show how deeply care about the contribution that (a) the person has made in the world, or even just for them personally, is to use the form of art they are most familiar with.

American Pie - Don McLean
The song pays homage to several celebrities from highly respected rock and roll who were killed in a tragic plane crash on February 3, 1959. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper were killed in the crash. Their death was regarded as such a loss to the world of music that date became known as "the day the music died".
Candle in the wind-Elton John
Candle in the Wind is a song that was written as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, the American movie star emblem. The song originally used the words, "Goodbye Norma Jean", in which the singer later changed to "Goodbye England Rose" in tribute to Princess Diana after her death in an automobile accident.
George Harrison - all years
George Harrison was a member of the iconic rock and roll band by the Beatles. Although the Group had destroyed some years earlier, when John Lennon was murdered in New York, they wrote this song tribute after the joy of their friendship and work together.
Abraham, Martin and John-Dion
Rather than being written on a single person, this song was written as a tribute to four giants of social justice and the progress, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., John f. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, who were all killed by assassins.
Happy birthday-Stevie Wonder
In fact written as a protest song, Stevie Wonder wrote the lyrics to "Happy birthday as a reaction to the rejection by the political leadership of a national holiday in honor of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., national leader of civil rights."
King, Steve Martin
Certainly one of the more unusual songs written for someone famous, the King was a song written and Sung regularly by comedian Steve Martin comedy. Even if some words are quite stupid, the song is very popular and served to familiarize the youth about the history of the ancient Egyptian rule.
Biko-Peter Gabriel
Steve Biko was an activist against apartheid in South Africa in the 1970s. He was arrested after taking part in a variety of anti-apartheid activities, and after his arrest, he was beaten and taken to prison, where he died. The song is a tribute to him and was featured in the film Cry Freedom, which was on the death of the activist.

Writing-how to write melodies of practice

Of course, do the more you something, you'll have to it. For this reason you must be writing songs every day. If you do not have the time, this is normal. A great secret that I learned from successful composer Clay Drayton, are constantly put melodies to phrases, proverbs and signs meet you in your everyday life. If you see a street sign that says "Mulberry Road", "sing a melody that.". The same could go something as simplistic as a sign of exit ramp, or numbers on a House.

Many of you just may not be that good, but this is normal. Melodies of the writing, or all songs also is a skill to develop. Much of what happen you to can only be good, but more you do, the more you'll. It's like any other competence development in life. Practice makes perfect.

Moreover, this exercise will be refine your mind to be aware of melody. When it is time to write a song, write a melody comes more easily to you. If you are carrying around something to record your ideas with, you can easily capture something that you like and use it in a song when it's time to write. I would recommend carrying around either a mini recorder, or simply by downloading an application to register for your smart phone. This is a great way to capture ideas on the fly.

Start right now by looking round the room, that you are in a short sentence you can put a melody to and see what you find!

Easy Tips for First Timers Learning How to Make Beats Using Beatmaker Software

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

We've all been there. Wanting to know how to make your own beats but not really knowing where to start. I'm going to share a few tips that will aid you in making beats. Even if you have absolutely no clue what to do, following this article will get you making your own beats in no time. Remember, without some sort of beatmaker software, these beat tips will only take you so far!

Once you have the beatmaking program you must become comfortable with it. I know it seems so silly, but a lot of people are scared of breaking things. Don't be. There is no better way to learn something like messing up a few times. That is really step one, get to know what you are using.

Typically, it is easiest to start with your drum pattern: kick, hi hat, snare. This is what most hip hop and rap beats are made up of. Set your BPM or tempo to 120, set hi hats to give a steady "tick," then use your keyboard or pad to make the beat itself. We can tweak the samples, volume, position etc. later. We just want to have a starting point mainly to become more confident and comfortable.

Pull up your library of samples and find a clean piano sound. I know a lot of people hoop and holler about sampling other songs... I never really got into that personally. Producing a hip hop beat from scratch always made me feel like I'm accomplishing something, which we are! Again, using your beatmaker software, start playing around with piano sample while your beat you just made is looping in the background. Once you hear that piano loop that really fits, record it and move on.

To me, heavy bass samples really complete the rap style beats. You notice in populated areas the cars with that thumping bass pulling up next to you. That is what you want. Just as we did when finding the piano sample, search your bass sounds and find that one that will harmonise with your beat. The simplest way is to use the same octave or tone that you did with the piano. It will blend and sound clean, for sure.

So, to wrap this article all up... Find the software and become comfortable with it. Start with the beat itself: kick, hi hat, snare. Next throw in your piano sample. Then a bass sample. VOILA! It is really this simple to make your own beats. I am a firm believer in keeping everything simple. Less is more when it comes to producing your own beats. Happy Producing!

Ideas for Preschool Piano

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Many parents want to start their preschool children at the piano as soon as possible, in keeping with the common knowledge that musical skills are best begun early. But there are pitfalls of which parents should be aware, not the least of which is expecting too much.

Before you begin your child with preschool piano, you should examine your motives first.

If you are thinking that your child will someday be a great musician, think again. The music business passed "cutthroat" several decades ago. There is no reason to doom your child to the life of disappointment that is the life of almost all musicians, talented or not.

If you are thinking that exposing your child to the piano is a good idea, and that maybe they would enjoy making music on their own level, you are on the right track.

I would be very careful of starting your preschool child with a piano teacher who insists on reading music right away. The truth is that reading music is an intellectually exhausting task for children, and literally, optimistically, one in a million children is comfortable with it right away.

What preschool children are looking for, from their point of view, is musical fun through the medium of the piano. Children this age know only that music is that funny, bouncy stuff that comes in through your ears, and makes you happy. You would do well to keep this in mind in constructing a curriculum for them, or choosing a piano teacher.

The simplest way to happily engage a child with the piano is to number the piano keys and have them start playing familiar songs right away. The alternative is to introduce them to the minutiae of the rudiments of musical notation, and that is a course headed for disaster.

The proper course for preschool children's piano lessons is to engage them happily with the instrument, and only after that engagement is firmly in place should you broach the idea of reading music. I can guarantee their response to reading music, even with a benevolent, spoon-fed approach: "This is confusing." That is the reality of preschool kids and reading music, and anyone who tells you otherwise has little experience with actual children in front of the piano.

I suggest you let preschool kids be kids first, and then see where that leads.

You will need almost Biblical patience and creativity to interest a child this age in the piano.

Remember that the only habit required to start learning the piano happily is to be happy in front of a piano. If you fill preschool heads with advanced ideas, guilt and pressure, they will walk away from it as fast as they can.

Once a preschooler has decided that the piano is an unhappy, difficult experience, you will have the same difficulty that one would have herding cats.

Try numbers at first for preschool piano. It really works from the child's point of view.

Here's link to the Piano By Number site where you will find lots of ideas about starting your preschool child at the piano: http://www.pianoiseasy2.com/

What Kind Of Music Makes You Feel?

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

How does music make you feel? Does it invoke feelings of passion, a yearning for the past or do you get chills running up and down your spine? Whatever feeling music brings to you it can be agreed that everyone loves it and wants to hear it.

That may be so for most people but, I have never been a fan of hip hop or rap simply because it made no sense to me and did not appeal to my romantic side. To my mind romance is not the topic of most of these types of music. I am sure that there are some people who will disagree with me and try to persuade me that music must grow, change and evolve into distinctive expressive modes.

That may be so. But when you listen to some of the music of today what do you hear? Well I will tell you what I hear. I hear brashness, innuendo, insensitivity and violence. What kind of music and moral values are our children listening to? I shudder to think, and what kind of role models are our children trying to emulate?
Give me the old tunes of yester year the smooth sultry music of happiness, expectation and love. The songs of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Junior who through their understanding of the craft managed to create and develop all aspects of their trade while at the same time made it look so easy.

These singers and I emphasize "singers" never failed to get on with the romance in their music. They had talent and took the time to learn the business, and took pride in what kind of music was made. In those days it was not all amount money as it is with the "entertainers" of today.

Frank Sinatra, when he sang "Strangers in the Night" made us wallow in the sounds of romance and love and in so doing allowed us to enter the world of love and the expectation of love. And all this could not be accomplished if he had not expressed feelings through melody of the music.

We all enjoy listening to music whether it is Jazz, Mozart, Swing, Hip hop, or Rap because to each and every one of us we feel something when we hear it. This feeling may not be the same as the other when played but we all get some level of enjoyment from its self expression.

So, when I listen to music I want to hear feeling, and a melody that reminds me of moments in my life that I cherish. We could all live a lot longer and be a lot happier if we listened to music that soothed our minds and relieved the stress of our daily existence.

Edith Follett is an avid listener to all types of music particularly those of the 50s and 60s. She has a substantial array of classical and modern Jamaican dance hall music.
