The first song kids want to learn at the piano is Happy Birthday. It's the only song that has a dedicated function in their lives. But very few kids can read music well enough to accomplish this. Solution: put numbered stickers on the keys and play away!
There are many ways to use a musical language other than graphic music notation. Some players learn by ear, by eye, and now many kids are getting started using numbers.
Numbers are germane to a study of music in many ways. First, chords are calculated and named according to the distance between the keys, which is determined numerically.
Second, the intervals, those distances between the keys, are expressed as numbers. Third, chords as expressed in popular music, are named according to a regime of numbers, such as C7, or F9.
Kids already see numbers as second nature, becoming comfortable with them earlier than letters. So when they are applied to music, the child picks up the idea very quickly.
So what about Happy Birthday?
If you number your piano keys starting with Middle C as number one, and number the white keys to the right up to number 12, you will have a way for your child to start playing piano right away.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY:
5 5 6 5 8 7
5 5 6 5 9 8
5 5 12 10 8 7 6
11 11 10 8 9 8
It's very easy and satisfying to the child.
There are lots of ways to get kids interested in the piano using numbers instead of reading music to get them enthusiastically engaged.
Most kids who start piano using notes want to quit very quickly, and the reason is that reading music is too thought intensive for almost all kids.
The child's instinct is to have fun, not slog through a lecture on the rudiments of musical notation. There is a time for fun, and there is a time for work, and you are well advised to have a lot of fun at the piano before you turn it into drudgery. A good start leads to further enthusiasm.
So you are on the right track if you are trying to use familiar songs like HAPPY BIRTHDAY to get the child started. Other ideas include songs like Jingle Bells, Scooby Doo and anything else that the child has heard and with which the child is familiar.
I include a link below to HAPPY BIRTHDAY on an online piano using numbers instead of notes.
