I discovered the website and this range of violins completely by chance whilst looking for something else. This is an English company based in Dorset which make hand-built violins that can be used either acoustically or electric.
You can tell that the owner of Sonic Violins Richard Roberts, really cares about the products that he is selling, and that counts for a lot in this day and age. His career had been in design, development and project engineering, and after years of putting up with "off the peg" electric violins, he decided to make his own. He states on his website that the starting point for a superb Electric violin, has to be an acoustic, and unlike many developers he sees no reason to change the shape or design; something I wholeheartedly agree with.
All instruments bought from Sonic can be either electric or acoustic, and each one can be set up to your own specifications, so individual requirements are catered for which again, goes against normal Electric Violin sales.
There are three standard grades of violin.
The Sonic Attack, comes in at a price of just under ?600,00 and is a quality made violin hand-built from the raw materials to the finished product. The Pick-up system is unique as it is incorporated into a split bridge.
The Sonic Classic, costs approximately ?895,00 and is for the player looking for a high quality instrument for orchestral and solo performances either acoustically or electric. There is a five string version of this violin.
The Sonic Heritage range cost ?1895,00 and are fine examples of modern violin making and also excellent value for the money. The violins are made in China and are produced at a great price for professional players who are looking for quality but not exorbitant prices.
As a review, I should now switch to some negatives about the violins to balance out the article, but this is one of those occasions where I just can't think of any off-hand. I fully support this type of small company, and Richard Roberts admits that he doesn't think that Sonic will ever be a major player in the Electric Violin industry, but if you visit the website just go to the list of well-known artists that are using the instruments and you will realise that this is a quality product.
In conclusion I would strongly recommend that you at least have a look at this violin before going out and buying a Fender, NS Design, Yamaha or other eminent Electric violins, and compromising on the sound and feel.
