The long wait is over and Kenny Chesney's new album 'Welcome to the Fishbowl is finally here'. Kenny is keen to point out that the title track of the album is not a complaint about the stresses of celebrity life, but rather a reflection of the world in which we all live. "It's a song everyone can relate to" Kenny says, 'You don't have to be famous now to be a star, just get caught on video, and there ya are.'
Kenny is communicating the message that we all now live our our lives in the public eye to one extent or another due to social media and reality TV. Aalbeit through the medium of a lighthearted country rock radio tune!
On the whole Kenny gets a lot more personal and reflective on this album. With the exceptions of "Feels like a Rock Star" (duet with Tim McGraw) "Welcome to the Fishbowl" and "Time Flies" the rest of the album is not high energy country rock, but instead a mixture of mid to slow tempo country ballads.
This may send many Kenny Chesney fans running screaming, but do not fear, this album loses nothing from the change in tempo. On the contrary Kenny digs down deep on this record and it's all the richer for it.
It kicks off with the plaintive "Come Over" written by the fantastic Shane McAnally (who also penned Jake Owen's "Alone with You"). A moving song, about that difficult time when a relationship is over, but not completely.
You see a gentler side to Kenny on "Sing Em Good my friend" he sings "It's a grand illusion when you think you're in control". This is lyrically one of my favorite songs on the album, it shows an example of the kind of lyrical and emotional depths he is delving on his new record.
We move to some really traditional country sounds on "I'm a Small Town". In this song Kenny reflects on the past, where he grew up and the effect that early life in small town has had on who he is today.
Kenny says the song that set the bar for the quality of the songwriting on this album is "While He Still Knows Who I Am". This is the closest and rawest song on the album, as Kenny sings about his father who is suffering with Alzheimer's. "I only knew him as my father, I'm going to get to know the man, I'm going back to see him, while he still knows who I am"
The tone continues with "Always Going To Be You", a song filled with longing for a lost love. He plaintively sings "For the endless ways you keep haunting me"
The album ends on a fantastic note as Kenny duets with the captivating and gustsy Grace Potter. Grace, Kenny and a crowd of thousands sing "You and Tequila" a song about a struggle with alcohol the hook line is "One More is Never Enough".
One more play of this album is never enough either, so a fitting way to finish a very fine record indeed.
