The Best British Music Festivals

AppId is over the quota

We're very lucky in Britain to be blessed with a national festival spirit. Ever since the Coronation street parties in the early 1900s, Britons have been imbibed with a natural urge to be outdoors with a drink in their hand; listening to live music and having a great time. Our tiny country plays host to some of the greatest and most popular music festivals on the planet, from minuscule grassroots events tucked away in the corner of rural counties to the global power house gatherings that attract city-like populations. Every has their own opinions, but here are some of my favourites.

1.) Beautiful Days

One of the larger 'small festivals,' Beautiful Days is nestled in Escot Park, Devon. It takes its name from the most famous song of the band that headlines its Sunday night every year, eternally punk rock 'The Levellers.' They also co-ordinate, organise and run the entire festival and as such it's unparalleled in its quaintness and stoic withholding from corporations. Every vendor is an independent trader, the fields are full of organic produce and eco elements. The Levellers have created and maintained a fantastic atmosphere in Devon, selling out every year and refusing to increase the capacity for fear of losing their atmosphere.

2.) Kendal Calling

I'll be honest, I hadn't heard of this festival until I was scheduled to work there. Somehow they've managed to position themselves in Lowther Deer Park in the Lake District, their fields rising and falling across the beautiful hillocks. Kendal Calling has a fantastic northern spirit, particularly famous for the alternative stages and tents for those wanting to escape the press of the main stage and big names. I haven't to this day seen a more talented collection of unknown comedians than I did at Kendal's comedy tent. Lounging on the grass inside the tent, pulling on a shisha pipe with a cider in hand, I watched a tumultuous eight hour non-stop parade of comedians, none failing to reduce their audience to tears and howls of laughter. Truly the festival to attend if you like arts, culture and unsigned talent.

3.) Glastonbury

I wanted to leave out Glastonbury, simply because it's the obvious and expected choice. But anybody who has ever been to this festival knows that it cannot be uncounted amongst one of the greats. In my opinion, nothing comes close to the spectacle that is Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts. Unparalleled in the international superstars that it can attract, this festival covers an area larger than some English cities can boast. The fields of Shangri-La and Arcadia which kick-off once the main stage has finished keep cycling until sunrise and beyond, sleeping is a waste of time at this event, there is far too much to see! I cannot put the experience of Glastonbury into words, you simply have to go.

4.) Bestival

The aptly named Bestival is my final inclusion in this list because it's the final festival of the season. Those who tour the UK attending all of the festivals will never miss this one, and neither will the traders who make a living from the industry. Bestival is the wildest one of the bunch, a last hurrah of fireworks and magic before we all have to return to the real world for the winter and autumn months. Pulling in an increasingly impressive collection of big names, Bestival is quickly becoming a competitor for Glastonbury, not least of all because Glastonbury has to take a year off every four years for the fallow of the fields. The atmosphere at Bestival is unmatched anywhere else, imagine the last night of your holiday when everybody is determined to have the best time possible; then multiply this by ten thousand and you won't be close. If you only go to one festival this season, make sure it's Bestival.
